On Saturday, December 1, 2018, Felicity-Franklin FFA members traveled to the Ohio State University to compete in the State Food Science and Technology Career Development Event and the State Job Interview Leadership Development Event.

Bailey Lowe, Luke Jennings, Kyra Davidson, and Audrey Pinger competed in the State Food Science and Technology Career Development Event, which includes a product development team activity and individual activities aroma identification, triangle tests, food safety and sanitation violation identification, equipment identification, math problems, and consumer inquiry.

The team placed sixth and Bailey Lowe placed third individually, earning a $1000 scholarship to the Ohio State University’s Food Science program. Luke Jennings placed 11th, Kyra Davidson placed 20th, and Audrey Pinger placed 43rd.

In preparation for the contest, the Food Science team visited a Kraft Heinz facility in Mason, Ohio on Tuesday, November 27. They listened to a presentation on Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) and the importance of a HACCP plan. In preparation for the state-level contest, they learned about Mason Kraft Heinz’s critical control points and measures they have in place to ensure their products are safe. The team also toured the facility, which produces and packages several sauces for food service. Members were able to see various machines utilized in production as well as some of the safety measures that ensure their products are safe.

Two members, Luke Jennings and Brayden Sponcil, participated in the State Job Interview Leadership Development Event. Luke placed 7th in the freshmen division and Brayden placed 4th in the first year junior/senior division. They each placed first in the chapter, sub-district, and district prior to competing in the state-level competition.
